Star Light, Star Bright – What Stars Do I See Tonight?

If you attended the Mason Area Chamber of Commerce Awards Dinner, you were privileged to honor two of our Mason Public Schools (MPS) stars who, I might add, do everything they can to avoid being in highlight – Jodi Sommerville and Betsy Collins.

Jodi received the President’s Award. She has been an employee of MPS for 21 years, serving the past 10 years at the administrative offices as executive assistant to the assistant superintendent of academic services, supporting the distribution of academic materials, enrollment and residency processes, coordinating district testing, assisting with professional development workshops and more!

Jodi serves on the Promise Scholarship Board and is a member of the Kiwanis Club, is involved in the Michigan Steam Engine and Threshers Club and a host of other initiatives. Above all, Jodi is a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and extended family member. If you haven’t figured it out already, Jodi is AMAZING. She is a true professional, always has a smile on her face and is the first person to ask, “How can I help?” She twinkles wherever she goes!

Betsy Collins, our other honored star, is known for her superb teaching. She has been a part of the high school faculty since 2007. She’s known for her scholarship, creative and cutting-edge pedagogical practices, building long term relationships with students, and possessing high expectations and accountability for herself and her students!

Betsy has coached junior varsity volleyball, Quiz Bowl, and boys and girls water polo. She has served as the National Honors Society advisor and has co-led student trips to Costa Rica. She teaches a wide range of science courses including Physical Science, Applied Physics, Physics, Advanced Placement (AP) Chemistry, Chemistry, Biology, and AP Biology.
Somehow, Betsy finds time to be very active in the community and currently is serving her second term as president of the Optimist Club. She is married to Mike Collins, and they have twin sons in college.

Anyone who knows Betsy would call her a “go-getter,” always ready to provide a supportive hand. Any wonder why she’s a star?

Both Jodi and Betsy are stand out figures who appear larger than life; they stand out against darkness and serve as guiding stars!
