March Madness: A Big Deal? Not Only for the Reason You Think!

March Madness is a mighty big deal in Mason Public Schools, but not necessarily for the reason you think! Actually, March is Reading Month is celebrated everywhere in the district! It’s a celebration of joyful reading in classrooms, with guest readers including family members, mystery readers, our new state superintendent of education and a legislator! There are also contests to pick favorite books, and a plethora of other creative reading activities.

Recently, I walked into Mrs. Reeser’s room at Steele Elementary and was surprised to observe students watching a video of Principal Mr. Kueffner giving a talk about his favorite picture book. According to Reeser, who designed this initiative, each day during March, students tuned in to watch the featured book talk created by a Mason staff member. They don’t just sit back and enjoy; they become part of the hype by voting for their favorite video- in tournament style and ultimately naming a champion.

Reeser goes on to say, “At Steele, and I would add Harvey, Alaiedon and North Aurelius- it’s clear March Madness isn’t just about basketball. It’s for books, and students are learning that books can be just as exciting as any game.”

I’d say, yes, March Madness is a big deal!
