Middle School Robotics Team Makes an Impressive Debut
This year marked an exciting milestone for Mason’s Robotics Program, Tractor Nation, with the launch of Team 32118, Tractor in Technicians in Training made up of Mason Middle School students.
The new team began the year with a Unified Team-style format with general education peers providing support, but by season’s end, most students chose to compete independently alongside their teammates, showcasing tremendous growth in confidence and skill. Truly becoming a competitive team!
“I could write for days as to how proud I am and the growth I have seen in the students, it has been the highlight of my career so far!” said Heather Cockroft, team advisor.
While not all students were able to attend every competition, each was still a valued and important member of the team. For events, the team made a collective decision to ensure that everyone had the opportunity to participate in their favorite role on the drive team.
During matches, one student served as the driver, controlling the robot’s movement and positioning, while another acted as the operator, using the controller to place “artifacts” into the depot.
Students were also guided on the field by a drive coach, a high school helper who provided gentle directions during matches. This teamwork and shared responsibility allowed every student to contribute meaningfully to the team’s success.
The team competed in a league of 32 teams from nine Capital Area schools. After going undefeated at their first event, the team finished 16th at a larger event and earned second place for the Sustainability Award, recognizing their collaboration, growth and commitment to the FTC community. To earn this award, students had to do a five-minute presentation and then answer questions from the judges as well as give interviews without preparation time or knowing the questions in advance.
Looking ahead, Cockroft said, “students are already asking me when next season is starting and are excited to continue with this!”
Way to go!
