Mason Athletics Honors Hall of Fame Class

The Mason High School Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2022 was honored Friday, October 21 during halftime of the varsity football game. Mason Athletics began honoring individuals and teams who have excelled on and off the field and brought great pride to the Mason community through the years.

 The 2022 inductees are:

Harvey and Carol Fanson

For more than 40 years, Harvey and Carol Fanson selflessly volunteered their time and energy to the Mason football, wrestling, and track programs beginning with their own children’s teams and continuing through the careers of their grandchildren. Every fall, Harvey coached teams from Mason’s Junior Bulldogs program all the way up to volunteering as an assistant for the varsity football team. Carol filmed competitions from the youth level through high school. Each winter, Harvey served as the wresting program’s scorekeeper and statistician while Carol filmed all the matches whether it was a weekday, weekend, or even an overnight trip to the Upper Peninsula. Additionally, they both played an instrumental role in the development of Mason’s youth wrestling club. In the spring, both volunteered at middle school and high school meets. Attendees of home track meets recognized Harvey out on the track organizing runners before and after their events, and Carol at the table logging the results. Their reliability in their roles was part of why track meets at Mason went off without a hitch. Their “behind the scenes” contributions have been unmatched, and they are proudly recognized for their dedication to the schools and athletic programs of the Mason community.

Kevin Snow, Class of 1995

During his high school career, Kevin Snow earned nine varsity letters in football, basketball, and track and field, excelling most in football. In his sophomore season, Snow’s football team won a league championship with a perfect 5–0 Capital Circuit record and an 8–2 overall record. As a junior, he was a standout earning All-League 1st Team recognition as he played running back and linebacker for the Bulldogs. In his senior season, Snow was the team’s Most Valuable Player as he did a little bit of everything for the team. In addition to carrying the ball on offense and making tackles on defense, he was responsible for kickoffs, punts, and extra points. He guided the Bulldogs to a share of the Capital Circuit title and to the playoffs for only the second time in school history. The team bowed out to the eventual state champions, Monroe Jefferson, but finished the season with a 7–3 record. Having recorded 52 solo tackles and 78 assists, Snow was a 1st Team All-State unanimous choice at linebacker and named the Lansing State Journal’s Co-Defensive Player of the Year. All the more impressive when you consider he wasn’t resting on the other side of the ball, rushing for 737 yards, scoring 19 touchdowns, and kicking 18 extra points that season.

At Ferris State University, he played linebacker for two seasons. In that time, Ferris State was the Midwest Intercollegiate Football Conference champions in 1995 and 1996 while making Division II playoff appearances both seasons.

Saylor Lavallii, Class of 2012

Earning nine varsity letters in football, basketball, and baseball, Saylor Lavallii was an All-League and All-Area performer in baseball, but it was football where he excelled most finishing his career as the program’s all-time rushing and scoring leader. Over the course of three seasons at running back, he amassed 4,003 rushing yards and scored 80 touchdowns. Playing in the Bulldogs’ secondary on the defensive side, he finished his career tied for third all-time with six interceptions. Lavallii was a key contributor on teams that totaled a combined record of 26–6, outscored opponents 1,190–476, and won three conference championships. Lavallii finished his football career at Mason as a three-time All-Conference, two-time Lansing State Journal Dream Team, and two-time All-State performer. As a senior, he was 1st Team All-State after rushing for 1,326 yards on 231 carries and scoring 33 touchdowns and was selected to play in the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association East-West All-Star Game.

At Central Michigan University, Lavallii earned three varsity letters in football. In three seasons at running back for the Chips, Lavallii totaled 1,368 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns. His sophomore season was his best seeing him play in all 12 games, starting in 8, and leading the team in rushing for the year with 807 yards.

Meg Darmofal, Class of 2015

A standout distance runner in both cross country and track, Meg Darmofal was equally exemplary in the classroom during her high school career. In cross country, Darmofal was a two-time league champion, two-time regional champion, three-time All-State, and two-time Lansing State Journal Runner of the Year. In track, she was a four-time league champion, four-time regional champion, and three-time All-State performer. Darmofal’s most impressive high school accomplishment was winning an individual state championship in the 3,200m in 2013. She set school records in the 800m (2:16.19), 1,600m (4:55.15) and 3,200m (10:43.00). Along the way Darmofal carried a 4.0 grade point average and graduated as the class Valedictorian. She was the Conference Senior Scholar Athlete and an MHSAA Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar Athlete Award finalist.

At the University of Michigan, Darmofal continued to run both cross country and track. In 2016, she was a member of the Big Ten Indoor and Outdoor Championship teams while earning Academic All-Big Ten Honors and the Academic Athletic Achievement Award. In 2018, she was a member of the Big Ten Cross Country Championship team. As a member of the indoor distance medley relay team, she was a USTFCCCA First-Team All-American in 2019, and a Big Ten Champion and USTFCCCA All-American in 2020.

2006 Girls Volleyball Team

The 2006 Girls’ Volleyball team’s campaign was a special one which saw the Bulldogs achieve a number of “firsts” for the program during  Coach Elisa Zwick’s tenure. The team was not a favorite in Division 2 of the Capital Area Activities Conference, predicted to finish just fourth in a preseason coaches poll. But the team surprised many when they navigated league play with an undefeated record making them outright CAAC Division 2 champions for the first time. Using that momentum, the team made a memorable run in the state tournament going further than any prior season. The Bulldogs defeated favored Haslett in three games to win a district championship. The team brought home Mason volleyball’s first regional title in school history after defeating Corunna in three games. Their historic season came to an end in the state quarterfinals with a loss to Chelsea in four closely contested games. The team finished the season with an overall record of 45–13–1 along with conference, district, and regional titles.
