Fifth Grade Entertainers at MSU Cowles’ House: What’s Up with That?
As a bonus for being a long time Wharton Center advisory member and past chair, every year I receive an invitation to their annual holiday party. This year it was held at the Michigan State University (MSU) President’s House, Cowles’ House.
While the event is always special, this year it truly was extraordinary because fifth grade students from North Aurelius Elementary were the entertainment. You are no doubt wondering how the Wharton Center leadership found the school and these youngsters. Well, two impressive factors were responsible. Last year, North Aurelius teachers applied for and received a Disney scholarship from the Wharton Center, which supported their performance of the musical “Aladdin.” The second factor is Laura Showers. She has a long-standing relationship at the Wharton Center as a participant in a host of initiatives, including the MSU Arts Residency.
The entertainers at the Cowles’ House were four fifth grade students along with Laura, who provided the background of this amazing three-year Disney initiative. They wooed the audience with their beautiful voices, and their stage presence was something to behold!
Both North Aurelius and Alaiedon have already selected their musicals for the upcoming year and casting has begun! Would you believe approximately 80 students will have this once in a lifetime experience again this year?
Survey data validated the impact of these types of performances on students including self-esteem, self-concept, student community support, making new friends, attendance and behavior. Many students also indicated the experience changed their lives.
Entertaining at Cowles’ House for four fifth grade students and performing on the stage at the Wharton Center may be only a dream for some students, but for MPS students it could be one step closer to appearing on Broadway! Stay tuned!
