Dear Harvey Education Center families,

Out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to move to remote learning for tomorrow at the Harvey Education Center. We have also closed our tuition-based programs and child development center for tomorrow. All HEC families and staff have been notified of this change.

We are working with the health department to contact trace a positive COVID-19 case reported this evening. We wanted you all to be aware of what is happening at the HEC.

Mason, MI – As Mason Public Schools (MPS) students continue to return to school buildings this fall, the District has been keeping spaces clean using new pieces of equipment. MPS has purchased seven electrostatic backpack sprayers to allow the custodial staff to disinfect classrooms, common spaces, and school buses.

The Michigan Department of Education has recently published the annual Bulletin 1014. In this report, Mason Public Schools (MPS) has maintained a ranking for low total business and administrative costs per student compared to other Michigan districts for the years ending June 30, 2015 – 2019. For the last five fiscal years, Mason Public Schools has been ranked in the lowest 8% of all school districts in the state, for the lowest business and administrative cost per student.

Beginning November 4 and each following Wednesday, the instructional day will be modified to provide students the opportunity to participate in optional lessons including Amplify Science (K-5), Khan Academy (3-12) or other resources recommended by your child’s teacher or principal. Live instruction will continue in the afternoon following the schedules below.

District, Steele

Members of the YesMason! Committee and Mason’s School Study Committee joined the Board of Education Capital Improvement Committee (CIC) last Thursday to view the new design of Steele Elementary.

Members of the Steele Elementary design committee alongside GMB, the District’s architecture partner, shared the designs with the larger group. The CIC reviewed the design plans and the next step is for the project to go out for competitive bid in December.

Recently, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that students will continue to receive free meals through June 30, 2021. This is possible through a special program at the federal level to provide food to all students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

On October 19, a portion of our elementary students will be back in our hallways in-person for hybrid learning followed by middle and high school students in November. The District is eager to begin this process and move the 2020-21 school year forward. We apologize for the length of this message, however we feel there is a lot of important information included and we want to always be transparent with the community on how decisions are made for our schools.

Earlier this month, Mason Public Schools officially cut the ribbon on both Alaiedon and North Aurelius Elementary buildings after 15 months of construction. Both projects, which were funded through the District’s $69.7 million bond, broke ground in April 2019.

Mason, MI – Each year, 25 students are selected to be Mason Promise Scholars as they finish their grade 5 year. These Scholars are traditionally honored at a ceremony held in May. As we were unable to bring the group together per social distancing regulations, students were honored in a drive-up ceremony on August 5.
